Formaldehyde exposure reduction strategies include:
Implementation of effective and efficient preparation room ventilation.
Performance of routine air quality monitoring of staff and conditions
Utilization of contemporary preparation room design strategies.
Substitution of reduced index or formaldehyde-free embalming chemicals.
Maintenance and understanding of a Hazardous Chemical Identification List.
Primary methods for protecting yourself:
Substitute formaldehyde with non-formaldehyde alternatives.
Replace high index formaldehyde products with lower index options.
Secondary methods of reducing your exposure:
Employment of proper ventilation and continual air exchange.
Use of appropriate impervious personal protective equipment.
Institution of proper chemical handling, storage, and spill techniques.
Availability of continuous flow quick drench and eyewash stations.
The following practices will help minimize the risk of a sharps injury to you, coworkers, patients, and visitors.
1. Limit your handling of sharps. As soon as you finish using a sharp you should place the sharp in the appropriate container. You should not hand the sharp to another employee for disposal.
2. Obtain sharps training. You should only handle sharps if you have received training in the proper disposal of contaminated sharps.
3. Use leak proof sharps containers. Sharps containers must be able to prevent spills or leaks during storage or transportation.
4. Use PPE. Employees should practice standard (i.e., universal) precautions and use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).
5. Transport sharps in sealed containers. Sharps should be transferred in appropriate containers which you can seal.
6. Avoid recapping needles. You should not recap contaminated needles.
7. Dispose of syringes sideways. Syringes should be placed in sharps containers sideways,
where possible.
8. Ask questions. Contact our safety supervisor (listed below) if you do not understand our sharps safety practices or have comments on improving them.
Check with your General Manager or Safety Supervisor about what to do in the event of an emergency.
